Another big reason to install iOS 17.4 right now – it fixes two major security threats

Apple’s new iOS 17.4 does more than let you run third-party app stores, it solves two major security issues that had affected previous updates.

According to BleepingCOmputer, Apple says that iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 resolve two zero-day bugs in the iOS kernel and Apple’s RTKit that might allow an attacker to bypass your device's Kernel memory protection. These issues were potentially giving malicious actors very high-level access to your device. With this new update, users need not worry about hackers.

The iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later are among the many devices that Apple claims are affected by the problems. To put it another way, a large number of individuals might be affected.

Zero-day flaws like these are usually exploited in targeted attacks, often by sophisticated state-sponsored groups. Nonetheless, Apple did not disclose any information about the vulnerability or how they were able to uncover these issues.

On March 7, Apple provided further information on the security problems addressed in iOS 17.4, as well as upgrades for its other devices. It's unclear why these weren't included in the first iOS 17.4 release, but it's evident that Apple highlighted previously exploited issues to emphasize the need of upgrading.

In addition to the three flaws Apple first identified as corrected in iOS 17.4, the iPhone manufacturer has included roughly 40 changes on its security website. It may seem like a significant amount, but it is typical for a major point release like iOS 17.4.

With this kind of loophole, it becomes very important for consumers to keep all of their devices updated with the latest patches, especially if they include security fixes. Consumers who do not update their patches expose themselves to a dangerous gamble to malicious attackers. Make sure to download and install the latest iOS 17.4 as soon as possible.
