AWS expands UK infrastructure with fourth availability zone for London region

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has expanded its UK cloud infrastructure with the addition of a fourth Availability Zone to its Europe (London) Region, giving businesses greater capacity for artificial intelligence, machine learning and other demanding workloads.

The new Availability Zone, identified as eu-west-2d, increases the number of Availability Zones available to AWS customers in the London Region from three to four. AWS announced the expansion on August 19, 2026, describing it as a move designed to meet growing demand for cloud computing capacity in the UK.

More Capacity for AI and Machine Learning

A major focus of the new infrastructure is artificial intelligence. The new Availability Zone provides access to next-generation compute resources, including Amazon EC2 instances as well as Trn3 and P6 accelerated instances.

These technologies are designed to support demanding AI and machine learning workloads, including model training and inference. By making the latest accelerated computing options available within the London Region, AWS customers can run these workloads locally rather than relying on infrastructure in another AWS Region.

The development comes as demand for AI computing continues to grow among businesses, developers and public-sector organisations. AWS has already expanded the range of high-performance computing options available in London this year, including NVIDIA-powered G7e instances aimed at generative AI, large language models and other advanced workloads.

Improved Resilience for UK Businesses

The additional Availability Zone also gives customers more options for designing highly available applications.

Availability Zones are separate infrastructure locations within an AWS Region. Businesses can distribute applications and databases across multiple zones to reduce the impact of infrastructure failures and improve fault tolerance.

With four Availability Zones now available in London, customers can distribute workloads across more independent infrastructure locations, strengthening resilience and supporting high-availability architectures.

Supporting UK Data Requirements

Keeping more computing capacity within the UK could also benefit organisations with strict data residency and compliance requirements.

AWS has continued expanding services and infrastructure in its London Region, including AI-powered services and high-performance EC2 instances. Earlier this year, Amazon Quick became available in London, allowing UK customers to keep data stored and processed within the region while accessing its AI capabilities.

The new Availability Zone is available through the AWS Management Console, APIs and existing AWS workflows, with no changes to customer tooling required. Standard Europe (London) Region pricing applies.

The expansion reinforces AWS's growing investment in UK cloud infrastructure and positions the London Region to handle increasing demand for AI, cloud computing and resilient digital services.
