Google has unveiled its annual "Back to School" education updates, introducing a series of AI-powered learning tools and global subscription offers across Google Search, Gemini, and Google Workspace for Education.

The initiative combines consumer-facing study tools with deep integrations inside Google Classroom, aiming to provide students with tailored AI study assistance while giving educators centralized control over how generative models are used in academic settings.
Free Higher-Education AI Subscriptions Global Rollout
To drive adoption among higher-education students, Google is offering a free 12-month tier of its premium AI service to eligible college students worldwide:
U.S. Higher-Ed Offer: Eligible college students in the U.S. can redeem one free year of Google AI Pro (regularly $19.99/month), which includes access to higher Gemini usage limits and 5 TB of cloud storage.
International Higher-Ed Offer: Eligible college students across 140+ countries outside the U.S. can claim one free year of Google AI Plus, featuring expanded Gemini limits and 400 GB of storage.
New Consumer Features: Gemini Student Hub and Enhanced Search
For student workflows, Google introduced a dedicated Student Hub within the Gemini app alongside upgraded learning workflows in Search:
Custom Study Notebooks: Students can upload syllabi, reading materials, or lecture notes to Gemini to generate diagnostic quizzes, spot knowledge gaps, and receive bite-sized study plans.
Mobile Deep Research over Gemini Live: Allows higher-education students to generate comprehensive research reports and verbally talk through findings or source materials while on the go.
Interactive Search Visuals & Lens Assistance: Google Search can now generate interactive 3D concept visualizations and step-by-step problem coaching via Google Lens for subjects ranging from high school STEM to standardized entrance exams.
Enterprise K-12 Upgrades: Gemini in Google Classroom
For managed primary and secondary school environments, Google has expanded Gemini in Google Classroom to students of all ages (subject to district administrator controls).
The Back-to-School updates are rolling out globally across web and mobile platforms, positioning Gemini as a default workspace tool for both higher-ed studying and K-12 classroom management.
