IBM and VMware to create new services for hybrid clouds
On the 30th of August 2022, VMware and IBM announced at VMware Explore 2022 their new expanded partnership that aims to help global clients and partners modernise mission-critical workloads and expedite time to value in hybrid cloud environments.
Users can now modernise mission-critical workloads more easily with the new hybrid cloud offerings developed jointly by the strengthened partnership between IBM and VMware. This partnership led to IBM Consulting becoming a VMware GSI partner, the companies’ intent to deliver new jointly engineered IBM and VMware Cloud solutions and joint development and go to market.
IBM and VMware will primarily aim at regulated industries, healthcare services, financial services, and telecommunications. They will not only tackle complexities but also make sure that IT services match the rapidly evolving regulations in those industries.
IBM addresses the concern about the costs connected with refactoring applications for the cloud, which puts such projects out of reach of some organizations. Their officials believe that this new partnership's upcoming offerings will provide more openness for digital transformation projects.
According to Frank Dzubeck, president of Communications Network Architects Inc., this level of joint development has never happened between IBM and VMware in their longstanding relationship. He believes this is something many users look forward to seeing in the coming months.
They see that these two companies hold similar views about the future of hybrid clouds; their expansion of the co-development relationship doesn't come as a surprise to some.
Howard Boville, head of IBM's Cloud Platform, said, "By working together, we can provide our mutual clients with technologies that more easily leverage hybrid cloud services in whatever ways they want to use them,"
IBM officials highlight the importance of solid security and trust as a crucial part of the new services.
Under the terms of the expanded partnership, the IBM Consulting division becomes a member of VMware's Global System Integrators (GSI) program, a network of partners that provide managed cloud services for popular hybrid and multi-cloud environments. IBM Consulting will provide migration and modernization services.
The VMware and IBM Joint Innovation Lab, formed in 2018, will also be expanded under the deal. Since 2018, the Innovation Lab has produced about 20 hybrid clouds, AI-based projects that work with the IBM Cloud.
The agreement grows the lab's innovation pipeline for another three years and is funded to develop joint products.
IBM said that IBM-VMware lab teams are working together on a project that will enable the IBM Cloud Satellite for VMware users.
Regarding the workloads that have to remain on-premises, Cloud Satellite will support VMware workloads in any environment they currently run in.
IBM's Cloud Satellite management platform, which came to light last year, centralizes hybrid cloud management. It also provides a unifying layer of cloud services for users in any environment.
