IBM to replace 7,800 of its workforce with AI: what other job sectors are also at risk?

IBM has announced that it will replace its white collar jobs with AI, affecting 7,800 of its workforce. Globally two thirds of white collar jobs are going to potentially be replaced by AI in the next five years. Improving efficiency, reducing costs, improving productivity, but, in the case of IBM, leading to the physical loss of nearly 8,000 staff. With this announcement, what other job sectors are also at risk, to be replace with AI?



As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance, it is becoming increasingly integrated into our daily lives. From personal assistants like Siri and Alexa to self-driving cars and automated customer service, AI has proven to be a game-changer in many industries. However, while it offers numerous benefits, it also poses a threat to some jobs.


Here are some of the jobs that are most threatened by AI:

Customer Service Representatives: Customer service representatives are often the first point of contact for customers who have questions or concerns about a product or service. However, with the advent of AI-powered chatbots, companies are beginning to replace human customer service representatives with automated systems that can answer basic queries, route calls, and even provide personalized recommendations. This trend is likely to continue, particularly as natural language processing (NLP) technology continues to improve.


Data Entry Clerks : Data entry clerks are responsible for inputting information into databases and spreadsheets. However, as AI becomes more proficient at recognising and analyzing text and images, it is likely to replace many data entry clerks. AI-powered tools can now scan documents and extract information with a high degree of accuracy, eliminating the need for human intervention.


Truck Drivers: Self-driving trucks are already being tested on highways in some parts of the world. While it may be a few years before they become mainstream, it is clear that they will eventually replace human truck drivers. According to a report by the Center for Global Policy Solutions, the widespread adoption of autonomous trucks could eliminate nearly 300,000 driving jobs in the United States alone.


Bank Tellers: Bank tellers are responsible for processing deposits, withdrawals, and other transactions for customers. However, as more people opt for online banking and mobile apps, the need for physical bank branches and tellers is decreasing. Additionally, AI-powered chatbots are increasingly being used to handle basic banking queries and transactions, further reducing the need for human tellers.


Fast Food Workers: Fast food workers are responsible for taking orders, preparing food, and serving customers. However, as AI-powered kiosks become more prevalent in fast food restaurants, they are likely to replace many of these workers. These kiosks can take orders, process payments, and even suggest menu items, making them a cost-effective alternative to human workers.


Receptionists: Receptionists are responsible for answering phones, greeting visitors, and scheduling appointments. However, as AI-powered virtual assistants become more common, they are likely to replace many receptionists. These virtual assistants can answer calls, respond to emails, and even schedule appointments, making them a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to human receptionists.


Telemarketers: Telemarketing involves making unsolicited calls to potential customers in an attempt to sell a product or service. However, as more people rely on caller ID and blocklists to screen calls, telemarketing is becoming less effective. Additionally, AI-powered chatbots are increasingly being used to handle basic sales queries, further reducing the need for human telemarketers.


In conclusion, while AI offers many benefits, it also poses a threat to some jobs. Customer service representatives, data entry clerks, truck drivers, bank tellers, fast food workers, receptionists, and telemarketers are just a few of the jobs that are most threatened by AI. As AI continues to advance, it is likely that more jobs will be affected. However, it is important to note that AI also creates new job opportunities, particularly in fields such as data science, machine learning, and software engineering.
