Inside Beijing’s record-breaking 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games

At the National Speed Skating Oval, commonly known as the "Ice Ribbon," the traditional Olympic torch was replaced by a "Zhixin," or intelligence chip. A humanoid robot mounted on a robotic horse drew back a bow, released an arrow, and ignited the symbol to open the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games.

What followed over the five-day event was a display of physical engineering, software autonomy, and raw hardware limits.
The second iteration of the games marked a sharp leap in scale and complexity compared to its inaugural run. Over 2,056 humanoid robots from 666 teams representing 16 countries competed across 51 distinct events, ranging from traditional track-and-field to real-world industrial simulations.
A Robot Just Beat Usain Bolt’s Record
The biggest headline came from the 100-meter sprint. China’s Tiangong Ultra initially clocked 9.39 seconds, beating Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second human world record. It then pushed the robot record even further, recording 8.64 seconds in the final.
There was, however, a very robotic catch. Tiangong Ultra struggled to stop after crossing the finish line and crashed into a post. The impact produced sparks and a small fire. Other competitors also collapsed or suffered mechanical failures during the races.
The games served as an unfiltered look at the current state of robotics. Spectators witnessed numerous structural failures, mid-race balance collapses, and overheating actuators that required machines to be stretchered off the track.
More Than Just Running
This year's games introduced scenario-based competitions designed to test whether humanoids can actually perform useful work. Robots were challenged with tasks involving logistics, firefighting, cable connections, food preparation, housekeeping and other practical activities. Some competitions moved outside simulated arenas into environments resembling factories, hotels and homes.
The games serve as more than entertainment. They are a showcase for China's growing robotics industry and its broader push toward embodied AI, where artificial intelligence moves beyond screens and into physical machines.
What next?
Beijing's robot games show that humanoids are advancing at remarkable speed. But the biggest question isn't whether a robot can beat a human over 100 meters. It's whether it can walk into a factory on Monday morning, understand an unfamiliar task, use its hands accurately, recover from mistakes and work safely for eight hours.
