Last-second ignition failure halts SpaceX’s Second Starship V3 test flight

SpaceX was forced to halt the highly anticipated second launch of its upgraded Starship V3 configuration last week Thursday, after it failed to take off. The automated countdown reached the final three seconds, but an ignition anomaly inside the massive Super Heavy booster abruptly shut down the sequence, leaving the world’s most powerful rocket anchored to the pad amid billowing clouds of vapor.

The mission, designated Flight 13, was designed to build upon the baseline structural milestones established during the V3 configuration's initial debut in late May. With a massive 407-foot vertical profile, the fully stacked vehicle was cleared for a space-skimming, hour-long flight path halfway around the world.
More importantly, the mission was slated to execute the first-ever operational deployment of third-generation Starlink V3 internet satellites, a hardware evolution engineered to drastically expand global network bandwidth.
The Last-Second Automatic Intercept
The launch sequence proceeded flawlessly through propellant loading and final system checks, but the physics of the ignition sequence derailed the timeline. Live telemetry from the SpaceX broadcast captured the moment the ignition sequence commenced at T-3 seconds.
The surrounding water deluge system activated, but the onboard flight computers instantly detected a critical performance variance: four of the booster's 33 liquid oxygen and methane-fueled Raptor engines failed to ignite properly. Recognizing that launching with insufficient thrust could doom the vehicle to an immediate structural failure, the automatic abort system triggered an instantaneous, full-scale shutdown of the remaining 29 active engines.
"Some of the engines didn't start, triggering an automatic launch abort," SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed shortly after the scrub. "Now offloading propellant. Next launch attempt hopefully in a few days."
Swapping Hardware and Wall Street Waves
The pad abort introduces a fresh engineering hurdle into SpaceX's aggressive expansion schedule. To safely diagnose the failure, technicians immediately initiated deep offloading procedures to drain thousands of tons of super-chilled cryogenic propellants from the rocket's tanks. Musk later clarified that while the flight computers handled the shutdown flawlessly, engineering teams will manually swap out two of the affected Raptor engines at the launch site to ensure total system confidence ahead of the next flight attempt.
The technical setback reverberated directly into financial markets, illustrating the heightened scrutiny surrounding the aerospace firm following its historic June 2026 public listing. Following the launch failure, SpaceX shares slid 3% in after-hours trading to close at $131.11, dipping below its initial $135 IPO price for the first time since going public.
