Meta, Apple and Google applaud FCC's decision, which may open the door for new AR and VR apps

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have taken us on a journey beyond the physical world, where technology merges with our imagination. Through AR, digital elements merge seamlessly with our surroundings, elevating our perception of reality.

On the other hand, VR transports us to entirely new environments that defy space and time, creating unforgettable experiences.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken a big step forward for the future of wearable technology. Companies such as Apple, Broadcom, Meta, and Google have pushed for the FCC to open up a new band of spectrum that would allow for augmented and virtual reality wearables to be developed.

In response to these requests, the agency unanimously voted to open up what it calls "a new class of very low power devices"in the 6 GHz band. This move is expected to create an ecosystem of cutting-edge applications including wearable technologies and augmented and virtual reality that will help businesses grow while enhancing learning opportunities and advancing healthcare options.

Meta was particularly pleased with this decision as its smart glasses could now offer greater functionality outside of Wi-Fi range. Google's hardware group also praised this development since high-speed peer-to-peer WiFi communication will now be possible through this band.

Apple supported the FCC vote as well, calling it "a positive step forward."The company had previously advocated for opening unlicensed use of the 6 GHz band in 2020 along with other companies like Broadcom and Google who believed that creating a class of very low power devices would give AR/VR tools more mobility while allowing them to operate without wires or being confined indoors.

Overall, this decision by the FCC is seen as a win-win situation both for consumers who can enjoy better connectivity through their wearables but also for tech companies looking towards developing innovative solutions using AR/VR technology.
