Meta’s AI agent for WhatsApp Business rolls out globally

Meta has announced the global rollout of its AI-powered Business Agent for WhatsApp, expanding a tool designed to automate customer communication, sales support, and business operations across its messaging platforms. The launch marks a significant step in Meta’s push to turn WhatsApp into a full-scale business services ecosystem, integrating artificial intelligence directly into conversations between companies and customers.

The new system, called the Meta Business Agent, is now available to businesses globally after months of pilot testing in regions including India, Mexico, and Brazil. According to Meta, more than one million businesses had already interacted with earlier versions of the tool before the full release.

The AI agent is built to handle routine customer interactions inside WhatsApp Business, including answering frequently asked questions, recommending products, and guiding users through purchases or service requests. It can also escalate complex conversations to human staff when needed.

More than a chatbot

Meta says the agent goes beyond basic chat automation. It can qualify sales leads, schedule appointments, and support order-related queries, effectively acting as an always-available front desk for small and medium-sized businesses.

The system is designed to mimic a business’s tone and branding so customer conversations remain consistent even when handled by AI. Businesses can also customize how the agent responds depending on their products or services.

Meta has also begun testing features that generate daily summaries of customer conversations, giving business owners quick insights into overnight activity and potential leads.

Integration across Meta platforms

While WhatsApp is the primary launch platform, the AI agent is also being integrated into Instagram DMs, Messenger, and Meta’s broader business tools.

Meta is positioning the system as part of a unified enterprise AI ecosystem, allowing businesses to connect it with external services such as e-commerce platforms and customer support tools like Shopify and Zendesk. This integration is aimed at helping companies manage sales and support workflows in one place.

Pricing

The initial rollout is being offered free of charge, but Meta has indicated that paid tiers are planned for the future. Industry reports suggest that pricing may eventually depend on usage levels or business size, as Meta looks for new revenue streams beyond advertising. WhatsApp, which serves billions of users globally, has traditionally been under-monetized compared to other Meta platforms.
