Enterprise cloud software provider Nutanix has released an open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP), enabling AI agents and developer environments to execute infrastructure management tasks using plain-language instructions.

The release bridges large language models (LLMs) and coding environments, including Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and VS Code, directly with Nutanix’s Prism v4 API Gateway. By providing a structured, secure interface between AI agents and cloud systems, the project aims to accelerate infrastructure automation without sacrificing enterprise security and compliance controls.

Bridging Generative AI with Prism v4 APIs

The open-source MCP server acts as an operational passthrough that exposes the Nutanix Prism v4 API family directly to AI agents. Instead of writing manual scripts or searching API documentation, systems admins and DevOps engineers can prompt AI coding tools to inspect configurations, build automation workflows, and provision cloud resources.

The MCP server exposes four core operational tools to connected AI agents:

listOperations: Enables agents to search and filter available API operations across namespaces.

  • getOperationSchema: Retrieves complete request and response schemas for specific v4 API calls.

  • getCodeSample: Generates syntax-accurate code samples for operations across Python, Go, JavaScript, PowerShell, C#, and Ansible.

  • getOperationPermissions: Identifies exact roles and access control requirements necessary to execute specific workflows.

Built-In Governance and Security Guardrails

A primary concern for IT organizations adopting agentic AI is preventing unvetted or destructive actions across production environments. Nutanix designed its MCP server as a lightweight passthrough that delegates all identity verification, policy enforcement, and audit logging directly to the Nutanix Prism v4 API Gateway.

Part of a Broader Enterprise AI Strategy

The open-source project complements Nutanix’s broader enterprise AI roadmap, including the Nutanix Agentic AI solution. Developed in collaboration with NVIDIA’s accelerated computing stack, the platform helps enterprises construct, run, and govern private "AI factories" on hybrid multicloud infrastructure while optimizing GPU usage and token expenditure.

The MCP server for Nutanix Cloud Platform is available in Tech Preview as an open-source repository, allowing developers and IT administrators to deploy and test agentic infrastructure workflows across non-production environments.
