Ofgem grants Tesla license to supply electricity to British households and businesses

Tesla Energy Ventures, a subsidiary of Elon Musk’s automotive and technology giant, has officially been granted an electricity supply license by the UK energy regulator, Ofgem. The move, effective as of March 11, 2026, marks the company's formal entry into the retail energy market across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The license allows Tesla to sell electricity directly to both domestic and non-domestic consumers, moving beyond its previous role as a hardware provider for solar panels and Powerwall batteries. The authorization is the culmination of a seven-month regulatory review and positions Tesla as a direct competitor to established "Big Six" utilities and tech-focused suppliers like Octopus Energy.

Expanding the "Tesla Electric" ecosystem

Industry analysts expect Tesla to replicate its "Tesla Electric" model currently operating in Texas. This ecosystem leverages the company’s "Virtual Power Plant" (VPP) technology, which allows homeowners with Powerwall batteries to store energy when prices are low - or from solar generation - and sell it back to the grid during peak demand.

While Tesla owners in the UK previously accessed VPP benefits through partnerships with third-party providers, this new license enables Tesla to manage the entire energy value chain. The company’s Autobidder AI software is expected to play a central role, autonomously managing grid exports to maximize consumer credits and stabilize the national grid.

Strategic pivot amid automotive headwinds

The expansion into the UK energy sector arrives at a critical juncture for Tesla’s European operations. Recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows a 37% decline in Tesla’s UK vehicle sales for February compared to the previous year.

By diversifying into retail electricity, Tesla aims to build a "closed-loop" ecosystem that creates long-term recurring revenue and deeper brand loyalty. Under the terms of the Ofgem license, Tesla will be restricted to electricity supply only, meaning customers will still require a separate provider for gas. Not an issue as it aligns with the company's "all-electric" mission.

Ofgem noted that as a licensed supplier, Tesla must adhere to strict UK standards regarding billing transparency, financial resilience, and consumer protection.
