Over 4,500 Google workers confront CEO Sundar Pichai with historic petition demanding ai layoff protections

More than 4,500 Google employees have formally delivered a sweeping petition to Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai, exposing the deep labor anxieties underlying the artificial intelligence boom. The organized push demands aggressive corporate safeguards against ongoing workforce reductions as the technology titan pours billions of dollars into automation infrastructure while simultaneously flattening internal engineering teams.

Orchestrated by the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU), the labor action represents the largest formal piece of employee feedback regarding baseline job security in the search giant's twenty-eight-year corporate history. Union organizers and software engineers marched directly to Google’s primary corporate headquarters in California to physically deliver the document.

AWU President Parul Koul noted that representatives were largely greeted with closed doors, forcing them to leave the stack of thousands of physical employee signatures with a standard office assistant who pledged to hand-deliver it to Pichai.

The baseline friction stems from a stark contrast between corporate prosperity and localized employment precarity. Activists highlighted Google’s massive $4 trillion market valuation, a metric that has quadrupled over the last six years, arguing that recent targeted workforce terminations are driven by an aggressive prioritization of short-term profit margins over long-term institutional knowledge. While Google leadership has avoided explicitly linking recent internal terminations to software automation, the company recently cut various roles across its core Google Cloud architecture, citing a strategic imperative to heavily reinvest resources into frontier generative AI engineering models.

To shield the broader workforce from further displacement, the petition outlines four mandatory structural labor protections:

  • Guaranteed Minimum Severance: Establishing a firm, non-negotiable financial safety floor for any terminated employee.

  • Prioritized Voluntary Buyouts: Mandating that executives offer voluntary exit packages across all affected product lines before enforcing involuntary terminations.

  • Extended Paid Leave Alternative: Allowing visa-dependent international employees to take their severance as continuous paid leave, giving them a vital legal window to secure secondary employment before facing deportation.

  • Abolishing Quota-Based Reviews: Eradicating a controversial, forced-distribution performance review system that workers allege mandates arbitrary lower rankings to simplify subsequent headcount reductions.

The internal uprising mirrors a wider labor movement building across Silicon Valley. For instance, a group of Meta workers recently filed a major lawsuit alleging that AI evaluation tools were utilized to discriminatorily flag employees for termination following parental or medical leave requests.
