Tesla recalls all 3,878 Cybertrucks over faulty accelerator pedal
Tesla has initiated a recall of all Cybertruck models delivered to customers due to a defect causing the accelerator pedal to become stuck.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed on Wednesday that the issue involves the accelerator pedal pad dislodging and getting trapped in the vehicle's interior trim when subjected to high force.
Tesla was first made aware of the defective accelerator pedals on March 31st, followed by a second report on April 3rd, as per the timeline reported in the NHTSA filing. The company identified the cause through internal assessments on April 12th, leading to the voluntary recall.
According to the recall notice, the problem was caused by an "unapproved change" during the assembly process, where the introduction of "lubricant (soap)" reduced the retention of the pedal pad.
While the truck's brakes will still function if the accelerator pedal becomes stuck, this presents an obvious safety concern and can turn tragic if the driver panics,
However, Tesla has said that there are currently no reported incidents of collisions, injuries, or deaths related to the pedal fault.
The recall affects all Model Year (MY) 2024 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured from November 13, 2023, to April 4, 2024, totaling 3,878 vehicles. This essentially includes every Cybertruck delivered to customers since its launch event last year.
Reports of delayed deliveries earlier this week hinted at a potential recall after Cybertruck customers were informed by their vehicle dealership about the issue. A Cybertruck owner on TikTok also highlighted the fault, demonstrating how it caused the accelerator to remain at full throttle.
Tesla is notifying its stores and service centers of the issue as of April 19th and has committed to replacing or reworking the pedals on recalled vehicles at no charge to Cybertruck owners. Additionally, trucks produced from April 17th onward will come equipped with a new accelerator pedal component and part number.
