Tesla renames "Full Self-Driving" to "Tesla Assisted Driving" in Europe to satisfy regulators

Tesla has officially dropped its "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) branding across Europe, renaming the advanced software package to "Tesla Assisted Driving". The rebranding follows years of pushback from European regulators and consumer advocacy groups that warned the original name overstated the capabilities of Level 2 driver-assistance technology and misled consumers.

The shift represents a notable commercial concession from the automaker, which has used the "Full Self-Driving" moniker as a primary marketing pillar since 2016. The change applies across vehicle configurators, sales platforms, and marketing materials in the UK and continental Europe.

Regulatory Pushback from Germany's Transport Ministry

The rebranding was finalized after direct negotiations between Tesla and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport. German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger publicly flagged the FSD label as "misleading," emphasizing that drivers must remain 100% responsible for vehicle operation and keep their attention on the road at all times.

In exchange for the name change and technical commitments, such as limiting automated speed overages to a maximum of 10%, German authorities agreed to support Tesla's push for type approval across the European Union.

Key operational and regulatory details of the European rollout include:

  • Website and Branding Updates: European sales pages now feature "Tesla Assisted Driving," while "Enhanced Autopilot" has been renamed "Tesla Assisted Driving Basic" in select regional markets.

  • U.S. Market Divergence: The North American market retains the "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" branding, reflecting differing regulatory standards between the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and European type-approval frameworks.

  • EU Vote Postponed: A scheduled EU-wide vote on approving the driver-assistance software for general European deployment was pushed from October to December 2026 as member states, including France, conduct additional field evaluations.

Clearing Compliance Obstacles for EU Type Approval

Eight EU member states currently permit limited trial deployments of the Tesla software, with Slovakia expected to become the ninth. Regulatory clearance across Europe is critical for Tesla's long-term autonomous driving strategy, ensuring its fleet can deploy OTA software updates smoothly once pan-European regulatory approval is formally granted.
