Virtual Reality brings modern vision to working environment training

In the realm of virtual reality (VR), we find ourself amidst a computer-simulated world, surrounded by others who appear as robots. The mission is to conquer a series of challenges and escape the planet via a space pod. However, success rest on the entire team's escape, not just a few individuals launching on their own.

This is not a mere video game; it's a unique training session where you and your colleagues use VR headsets. As far as team-building exercises go, it certainly beats the hours spent in a conference room.

In the simulation, each workplace team has three or four opportunities to devise an escape plan. Participants can immerse themselves from different angles – as a leader, an ordinary robot, or an observer. Once the VR goggles are removed, the group engages in a discussion talking about the dynamics that contributed to both their failures and successes.

Bryan Barnes, Head of Research and Development at Jenson8, emphasizes how this experience fosters a deeper understanding of individual roles within the team, paving the way for conversations that ultimately strengthen the team's dynamics.

The pandemic forced millions of employees into remote work and virtual meetings, prompting a significant shift in training methods. Zoom calls since March 2020 have demonstrated that physical presence is not always necessary. With the advancement of VR technology, an increasing number of companies are now turning to VR goggles for skill refreshers.

Mike Wynn, overseeing VR-based training at Bank of America, notes that this approach is particularly appealing to younger employees accustomed to immersive gaming technology. "The attention spans are not the same as they were a decade ago," he observes, highlighting the need for quick access to information in a visual format.

But does VR training yield better results?

Employees learning via VR are four times faster than their classroom counterparts, with 1.5 times greater focus. VR allows for continuous practice, resulting in higher retention rates and improved engagement.

Moreover, VR training can be more cost-effective and safer than real-world alternatives, especially for high-risk jobs. Instead of immediately exposing individuals to dangerous environments, VR simulations can provide essential training. Many VR systems offer automated feedback, a feature valued by companies like London-based VirtualSpeech, which specializes in VR-based training for public speaking and leadership skills.

VR-based training is revolutionizing the learning space by offering benefits such as faster learning, enhanced retention, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to practice in a safe, controlled environment. As technology continues to evolve, it's clear that virtual reality is here to stay as a powerful tool for training and development.
