You can pay $30 to receive Extended Security Updates after Windows 10 retires in 2025

Microsoft has announced a paid Extended Security Update (ESU) option, allowing consumers and businesses to continue using Windows 10 safely after it reaches its end-of-support on October 14, 2025. For a one-time fee of $30, Windows 10 home users will receive essential security patches for an additional year.

This extension is aimed at individuals who, for various reasons, may not be ready to transition to Windows 11. Statcounter Global Stats data shows over 62% of all Windows systems still run Windows 10, while only 33% run Windows 11 three years after its October 2021 launch.

However, it's important to note that this is a temporary solution, and users are strongly encouraged to consider upgrading to Windows 11 for a more comprehensive and long-term security experience.

"With the Windows 10 End of Support moment, now is the time to move to Windows 11 with confidence. We understand change is never easy, but we are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible," said Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer.

Key Details About the ESU Program

Target Audience: Microsoft primarily aims the ESU program at organizations and businesses with legacy systems that may have compatibility or operational challenges in migrating immediately to a new OS. However, individual users still relying on Windows 10 will also have the option to secure their systems against vulnerabilities with this one-year security update package.

Coverage and Limitations: ESUs will only include critical security updates, designed to patch vulnerabilities and protect users against cyber threats. The updates will not add new functionalities or improvements to the Windows 10 experience, meaning users will retain the same software capabilities as before but with added security against emerging threats.

Conclusion: Microsoft’s Goal

The paid extension is a way for Microsoft to encourage users to transition to Windows 11 or future Windows versions. However, for businesses and individuals facing compatibility challenges, this program provides a temporary safety net to remain protected while planning an eventual upgrade.
