Apple Transition: Tim Cook to step down as CEO With John Ternus taking over

In the most significant leadership shift in Apple’s 50-year history, the company announced that Tim Cook will step down as Chief Executive Officer on September 1, 2026, handing the reins to hardware engineering chief John Ternus. The announcement, made on April 20, 2026, marks the end of a transformative 15-year tenure for Cook, who turned the iPhone maker into a $4 trillion juggernaut.

Cook will not be leaving the company entirely; instead, he will transition into the role of Executive Chairman of the Board, where he is expected to focus on global policy and continue mentoring the next generation of leadership.

The New Architect: Who is John Ternus?

John Ternus, a 25-year Apple veteran, has long been viewed as the frontrunner to succeed Cook. His appointment was approved unanimously by the board, signaling a return to a "product-first" leadership style.

Ternus has been the primary architect behind Apple’s most successful hardware transitions, including the move to Apple Silicon (M-series chips) and the design of the iPhone, iPad, and the recently launched iPhone Air. Insiders describe Ternus as possessing the technical soul of Steve Jobs and the operational integrity of Tim Cook.

"John has the mind of an engineer and the heart to lead with honor," Cook said in an all-hands meeting following the announcement.

A year of executive exodus

The CEO transition is the capstone of a massive overhaul of Apple’s inner circle. Since early 2025, several titans of the "Cook Era" have stepped down, including longtime operations chief Jeff Williams and Luca Maestri, the veteran CFO who oversaw Apple’s massive buyback programs.

Market and global reaction

Apple shares (AAPL) remained remarkably stable following the news, dipping just 0.5% as investors signaled confidence in the long-rumored succession plan. Political figures also weighed in on the legacy of the man who led Apple through the pandemic and various antitrust battles.

In a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump congratulated Cook on an "AMAZING career," noting the productive (though occasionally tense) relationship they shared regarding American manufacturing.

The road to September

Tim Cook will remain the active CEO through the summer of 2026 to ensure a seamless handover. For Ternus, the focus now shifts to the September 2026 Keynote, which will serve as both his debut as CEO and the launch of the iPhone 18, a product cycle that will define the start of the "Ternus Era."
