Reddit is about to reach a major milestone in its transformation from an internet forum into a publicly traded technology company. The social media platform will join the S&P 500 index on August 18, giving the company a place among some of the largest and most influential publicly traded businesses in the United States.

The announcement sent Reddit shares sharply higher, with the stock gaining more than 11% in extended trading after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the change.
Reddit Is Replacing AvalonBay
Reddit will replace real estate investment trust AvalonBay Communities in the benchmark index. The change is happening because AvalonBay is being acquired by fellow S&P 500 member Equity Residential. The combined company is expected to operate under the name Vivmark Residential and will remain in the S&P 500 following the transaction.
Unlike a regularly scheduled quarterly reshuffle, Reddit's addition is an off-cycle change prompted by the corporate transaction.
A Big Moment for Reddit
Reddit has undergone a dramatic transformation since its initial public offering in 2024. Once primarily known for its sprawling collection of online communities, the platform has increasingly built a business around digital advertising, data licensing and its large library of user-generated content.
The company recently reported $805 million in second-quarter revenue, representing a 61% increase from the same period a year earlier. Advertising revenue also grew 64% year over year. Those results have helped Reddit demonstrate the sustained growth and profitability needed to become an S&P 500 constituent.
Reddit will also become only the second pure-play social media company in the index, after Meta.
Why the S&P 500 Inclusion Matters
Joining the S&P 500 is more than a symbolic achievement. Thousands of investment funds track the index, meaning funds that replicate the benchmark typically need to purchase shares when a new company is added.
J.P. Morgan estimates that index funds could need to buy approximately 16.7 million Reddit shares, nearly three times the company's average daily trading volume since its 2024 IPO. That expected demand helps explain the sharp reaction in Reddit's stock following the announcement.
The inclusion could also increase Reddit's visibility among institutional investors and analysts, potentially giving the company greater exposure on Wall Street.
