In a major technical shift for cloud governance architectures, Microsoft 365 management platform ShareGate has officially launched ShareGate MCP. The integration represents the industry’s first enterprise application of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), designed to collapse traditional IT administration workflows directly into public large language models.

The release allows systems administrators and security teams to monitor, audit, and govern complex Microsoft 365 environments natively from within standard conversational interfaces, including Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot. By transforming isolated tenant metadata into a secure, queryable data layer, the utility completely eliminates the friction of switching between separate admin portals, running manual PowerShell scripts, or parsing bulky CSV exports to handle routine data hygiene.
Conversational tenant intelligence and zero-dashboard analytics
The tool acts as a secure data bridge, plugging directly into the pre-existing ShareGate Protect engine. Instead of navigating fragmented sub-menus to audit external access or identity risks, IT pros can surface critical security telemetry using standard, everyday language.
The initial rollout enables a series of high-utility, cross-tenant analytical workflows:
Oversharing and Exposure Audits: Administrators can immediately identify high-risk sharing loops by issuing direct prompts such as "List all external guests who have active access to the Finance department's SharePoint sites but haven't signed in for 90 days."
AI-Readiness Infrastructure Assessments: The protocol maps active document permissions, inheritance structures, and sensitivity labels to ensure organizational data is properly compartmentalized before deploying internal corporate AI copilots.
Multi-Tenant Aggregate Operations: Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and Global Systems Integrators can execute unified governance queries across entirely different client tenants simultaneously within a single conversational window.
Automated Branded Reporting: The system can instantaneously compile raw tenant intelligence findings into structured summaries and clean, white-labeled governance reports featuring built-in PDF export capabilities for seamless executive presentation.
Security concerns and future roadmap
Addressing concerns over the security risks of granting autonomous write access to frontier LLMs, the platform operates under a strict, human-in-the-loop validation paradigm. ShareGate MCP leverages OAuth 2.1 authentication protocols, ensuring the underlying AI engine only interacts with the specific tenant segments and administrative permissions already explicitly granted to the logged-in IT professional.
ShareGate has confirmed a secondary, expanded capability phase locked in for early July 2026. The incoming update will evolve the framework from a read-only analytics tool into an active execution engine, introducing automated policy creation and in-conversation remediation.
ShareGate MCP is available immediately to all active ShareGate Protect subscribers at no additional cost via a manual local installation process, with native cloud connectors scheduled to roll out across the major public AI platforms over the coming weeks.
